I Have Everything I Wanted. So Why Do I Feel So Empty?
It's a quiet Tuesday evening. The kids are fed, the emails are answered, and the house finally goes still.
You sit down with a cup of tea and wait to feel something. Proud, maybe. Content. Instead, there's a strange hollow space in your chest.
On paper, your life works. The career you built. The family you love. The home, the holidays, the photos that look lovely online. So why does it feel like you're living someone else's life?
If you've ever whispered to yourself, "I should be happy, so what's wrong with me?", this post is for you. Nothing is wrong with you. But something important is asking for your attention.
How a full life can feel so empty
Most of us didn't lose ourselves in one dramatic moment. We lost ourselves slowly, one reasonable choice at a time.
We became the reliable one at work. The organised one at home. The friend who always says yes. Each role made sense, and each one asked us to put our own needs on the back burner "just for now."
Years later, "just for now" has become a whole life. You know exactly what everyone else needs from you. But if someone asked what you want, you might not have an answer.
That emptiness isn't ingratitude. It's the part of you that got left behind, quietly knocking on the door.
Signs you've drifted away from yourself
See how many of these feel familiar:
- You're tired in a way sleep doesn't fix.
- You say "I'm fine" so often you almost believe it.
- You can't remember the last time you did something just for joy.
- You feel guilty when you rest, spend on yourself, or say no.
- You're calm on the outside but anxious or restless underneath.
- You scroll through other people's lives and feel a pang you can't name.
- You love your people, yet sometimes feel lonely in a full room.
If you nodded at three or more, you're not broken. You're disconnected. And disconnection can be reversed.
Why "just be grateful" doesn't work
You've probably tried the usual fixes. A gratitude journal. A weekend away. A new routine you were going to stick to this time.
They help for a while, then the hollow feeling comes back. That's because emptiness doesn't live in just one place. In my work, I see it show up on three levels:
Your energy. You feel drained, heavy or stuck, even when nothing is "wrong."
Your emotions. Old hurts, disappointments and swallowed words are still stored in you, taking up space.
Your subconscious. Deep beliefs like "my needs come last" or "I have to earn my place" quietly run the show.
Positive thinking only touches the surface. Real change happens when you work with all three: clear the energy, release the old emotions, and rewrite the beliefs underneath.
A 5-minute way to start coming back to yourself
You don't need to change your whole life tonight. Try this small practice instead:
💡 Try this
Sit somewhere quiet and place one hand on your heart.
Take three slow breaths, longer on the out-breath.
Ask yourself gently: "What do I need right now?"
Wait. Don't answer with your head. Notice the first feeling, word or image that comes.
Write it down, even if it seems small or silly.
Maybe it's rest. Maybe it's a walk alone, or a good cry. Whatever comes, that's your inner voice. The more you listen, the louder it gets.
You don't have to find your way back alone
I know this place well. I wrote a whole book about it, From Buried to Alive, because I spent years looking fine while feeling far from myself.
That's why I created The Triple Reset, a 12-week online journey for women whose lives look good from the outside but feel empty inside. We work on all three levels together — Clear. Release. Rewrite.
You'll have weekly live group calls plus private 1:1 sessions with me, so you're supported every step of the way.
If something in this post touched you, let's talk. Book a free 30-minute call and we'll explore what's really going on for you — with no pressure at all.
With love, Lina 🤍
